In 2021, I was asked to provide thought leadership and guidance for UX and the intuition behind the user experience.
I needed to give this app a new design direction while it was still in early development. People were already using the app under alpha conditions, so major changes were a challenge to receive approval on.
OptIn is a disruptive app focused on service or retail industry workers, and their workplaces. Along with shift scheduling, the app allows workers to swap shifts with co-workers in one business and accept shifts from other businesses as well. This is aimed at allowing companies that are having staffing shortages to receive workers from other businesses, a shift at a time.
At the beginning of any project like this I often explore various color and layout options, and vet these with the client. This practice helps the client to see various potential styles for their new app and can sometimes cut development time by allowing them to communicate their preferences. After a discussion we narrow the look down in the next phase, using what we learned from this exploration

Creating prototypes of an app or website is one of the best ways to convey the “feel” of an app. Movement in modern apps is very important and can often allow a complex app feel less complex to the user than it actually is. Users come to anticipate movement from screen to screen and, if these movements are consistently applied, they can help the user avoid confusion during these transitions.
Here is a sample of one of the many prototypes that I created for OptIn.
